Empower Newsletter – February 2012

Hello again and welcome to the February 2012 edition of the Empower Newsletter.  I have just returned from a wonderful week in Kiama.  What a beautiful part of the world it is.  The energy is so vibrant.  Although it is a common tourist spot, it has somehow managed to keep its country town like charm, with no high rises and traffic lights to speak of.  An amazing feat in the world we live in today.

Have you Noticed?

‘what happens when you focus on something else other than yourself?’

When destructive self-talk and thoughts are a constant problem in your life, change your focus to something or someone else and you will be amazed at the difference it makes to your life.

Constant critical banter in our heads has a negative effect on us and how we feel about ourselves.  The constant repetition is heard over and over again by your unconscious mind and because our unconscious mind is like a little child, it believes everything we tell it.  Would you tolerate someone else being as critical to you?  Surely not, so why do we allow ourselves to get away with it!   There are many ways to change this behaviour.  One of the best ways is to move the focus from yourself onto someone or something else.  An example of how this works in a group setting may go something like this.  Say you had to give a talk in front of a group.  You may have been OK about doing it until you started the negative self-talk such as ‘I hope I don’t stuff up or what if someone asks a question I don’t know the answer to?’  In this situation if you change your focus onto your audience instead of yourself, it will change the outcome.  Imagine how fantastic it would make you feel if you focused on all the great information you were about to give them and how it could enhance their lives.

If your critical self-talk is often about the way you look or the way you wished you looked, try focusing on the solution to the problem.  If you want to lose some weight, instead of the constant repetition of telling yourself the way you don’t like it (which no doubt makes you feel worse, which then usually leads to more eating to feel better, which ends up making you feel even worse about yourself), focus on what you need to do to look the way you would like to be.  This might be in the form of finding a personal trainer, planning your meals or establishing an exercise program for yourself.

By taking the focus off ourselves and placing in on what we need to do, this releases us from the sometimes debilitating negative self-talk that only ends up keeping us stuck and often struggling with our self-worth.  So by choosing to focus on the desired outcome we not only start working towards it, we also gain more confidence and self-worth in the process.

A Great Read

My Dirty Shiny Life by Lily Bragge

The memoir of this Melbourne-born arts writer has it all. Colourful characters, a colourful career and certainly colourful language.  This book is both harrowing and hilarious.  Lily Bragge knows what it is to be a user and a taker, a liar, cheat and thief.  It wasn’t until she had lost everything – custody of her son, her friends, her career, her possessions and, almost her sanity – that she was able to gain some kind of understanding of herself and rebuild her life from a blank, empty slate.   Extremely inspirational.
