Empower Newsletter – June 2012

Welcome to the June 2012 edition of the Empower Newsletter.  The main focus in this edition is about modeling.  Modeling is another tool that will get you what you want.

Do you know?

‘modeling can get you what you want!’

Your probably thinking, yeah right how can modeling get me what I want?  Well I am not talking about modeling as in a cat-walk super model, I am talking about modeling someone else’s behaviours and strategies in life and/or business to get the results they have.  When we model we elicit the strategies, patterns (beliefs and values) and physiology that allow us to produce a certain behaviour.   If someone already has the amount of success at something you want, instead of stumbling through and no doubt making mistakes as you go, doesn’t it make sense to model what they are doing.  By modeling, you have a short cut to getting what you want.  They have already made all the mistakes for you along the way and they know exactly what works and what doesn’t work.  This dramatically shortens the amount of time and heartache it would have taken you to get there.  Imagine if you model a behaviour that has already been proven to work, how much of a short cut it would be!

For example if you are struggling with something and want to become better at it, find someone who does it the way you would like to do it and model how they act, what they do, think and say to themselves.  This will replicate the results they are getting.  Once you get the results you can start tweaking it to suit your style.

There is no need for the person you will model to have every area of their life the way you want yours to be, only the area you want the same success.  For example, if you would like to have more work/life balance, find someone who already has success in this area without looking at any other area of their life.  You certainly wouldn’t want to model their diet if they weren’t experiencing the success you wanted.

Before you look for a model, it is important to be clear on the qualities and results you want.  For example, it is no use finding a model that has a different idea of integrity than you.  Look for a model that not only has the results you want, but also has similar values you will feel happy to model.

Here’s to getting what you want!  I would love to hear about how modeling has helped you get what you want.

All women are welcome and it’s free.

Modeling Tip

‘Fake it till you make it’ The ‘fake it till you make it’ principle is the idea that you can always act the part, whatever it is that may be required, and that, if you do this well enough, the act can appear to be indistinguishable from the genuine article. It involves the ‘being part’ and it is the essence of modeling. The great thing about modeling is that you really don’t have to understand how or why the tactics of your model work. You simply need to choose your model, analyse its characteristics and then work on acquiring them and, by the law of cause and effect, which states that like causes always produce like effects, you can then enjoy the same levels of success.

Quote of the Month

“Learning would be exceedingly laborious, not to mention hazardous, if people had to rely solely on the effects of their own actions to inform them what to do. Fortunately most human behaviour is learned observationally through modeling.” Albert Bandura
