Empower Newsletter – July 2012

Welcome to the July 2012 edition of the Empower Newsletter.  We are half way through the year, and for some, it’s a time of reflection which brings me to the main focus in this edition of ‘continuing to go for want you want until you get it.’

Do you know?

‘you have rules for failure!’

Have you ever been on a diet and given up because you didn’t totally stick to it!  Maybe you had some crisps or a sneaky biscuit or two.  How many times of breaking the diet did it take before you quit after deciding it was a waste of time because you weren’t sticking to it?  What about a prospective new employer or client that did not eventuate!  How many knock backs does it take before you give up?

Did you know that KFC’s Colonel Sanders was rejected 1,009 times over a 2 year period before he received his first ‘yes’ for his chicken recipe?  It sort of makes you feel a bit petty doesn’t it!

We all have certain rules (mostly unconscious) for what has to happen in order for us to know we have failed.  What are your rules for failure?  In other words, what has to happen in order for you to stop going after what you want?  Do you give up when something doesn’t go according to plan?  Do you justify it to yourself by saying you are not good enough, or thinking others are better or smarter than you?

Is so, your definition for failure may not be serving you?

Some of my clients rules for failure were so easy to achieve it’s a wonder they achieved anything at all.  Some rules included them thinking they were wrong merely because someone disagreed with them.  Others believed that they were not smart enough or good looking enough so they either didn’t start or quit.  This meant they gave up a lot!  When the criteria for our rules is met, that is all it takes for us to believe it is true.  So when the rules we have for failure are met, that means we believe we have failed.

This belief was not serving them at all!

The good news is ‘rules can be changed!’  How did you make up your rules for failure anyway?  Did you sit down and decide what rules would serve you in getting what you want?  Probably not!

So why not change your rules for failure (or anything else for that matter) if they are not serving you!  Make them hard to achieve.  My belief around failure is that the only way to truly fail is to give up!  Which means the only way I can fail is to stop going after what I want.  Although I am not sure I would hang in there after being knocked back 1009 times.

The only difference between someone who is successful and someone who is not, are their beliefs.  What does it take for you to stop going after what you want?  What are your rules for failure?

Events Schedule

Chicks in the City Wed 18/07/2012 at 6.30pm

Chicks in the City meet the third Wednesday of every month from 6.30pm to 8.00pm at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club, 117 Ryedale Road, West Ryde in the lounge area next to the Bristo.

Chicks in the City is a group for women to connect.  Basically it’s all about hanging out with women, meeting new friends, socialising, finding like-minded women to chat to or even making long lasting friendships.

All women are welcome and it’s free.

Something to Ponder

During Colonel Sanders’ period of rejection, not only did many people laugh in his face, he spent two years driving across America in his old, beat-up car, sleeping in the back seat in his rumpled white suit, getting up each day eager to share his idea with someone new. Often, the only food he had was a quick bite of the samples he was preparing for perspective buyers.

Quote of the Month

“I made a resolve then that I was going to amount to something if I could.  And no hours, nor amount of labor, nor amount of money would deter me from giving the best that there was in me.  And I have done that ever since, and I win by it.  I know.” Colonel Sanders

Great Read

All I have been hearing about is the erotic, liberating and deeply moving trilogy everyone is reading called ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ by E.L James.  I usually prefer non-fiction but this book sounds like a lot of fun.  It’s now on my reading list!
