Empower Newsletter – June 2018
Welcome to the June 2018 edition of the Empower Newsletter. This month the focus is on self-care and how not doing it can actually be selfish.

Did you know? |
Self-care is the opposite of selfish!
Yoga has yet again given me the inspiration for this edition of the Empower Newsletter. Our session this week was dedicated to self-care and how we need to take time for ourselves so we can recharge our batteries to enable us to be the best version of ourselves that we can be.
It reminded me how very easy it is to get caught up in our everyday lives, feeling that we don’t have the time or energy to do things for ourselves.
A common answer I get when I ask ‘what is stopping you from doing what you enjoy’, is the feeling of guilt, usually because they are taking time away from someone else. My next question is ‘if you are not at your best how can you give others your best?’
Taking this into consideration, is it fair to say that it is being selfish by not taking time out for self-care so one can be at their best for their loved ones, etc?
If you agree, how will you now choose to get your self-care so you can be at the top of your game?
It doesn’t matter what activity you decide is right for you. Self-care is a personal thing and what is right for you may not be right for someone else. Whatever makes you feel at your best is right for you.
Some people choose Yoga, meditation, reading a good book, relaxing in a hot bath or going for a walk, while others may decide that more physical or social activities, like going to the gym or catching up with friends for a coffee, are what helps them feel nurtured.
Whatever it is, do it now so that your family and friends get the best of you, not what’s left of you!

Self-care
The practice of activities that are necessary to sustain life and health.
Something to Ponder |
Self-care should always come first, but don’t let this lead you to thinking that self-care is “selfish”. I think of self-care like the airplane mask warning. When emergencies happen and the mask drops from the ceiling you are supposed to help yourself first. Then proceed to help others to put on their masks. The idea is that if you help others first, and fail, then there are two people out of commission. While if you take the time for a bit of self-care first (in the case of the plane putting on the gas mask) then you will be okay and in a position to help others more effectively.
